History of KIBT

The Kenya Institute of Business Training (KIBT) was established in 1966 after survey conducted in the year 1965 by the then Ministry of Economic Planning and Development with the assistance of ILO/UNDP. The survey revealed that most of entrepreneurial and managerial activities were the preserve of the European and Asian communities who controlled the economy. The objective of the establishment of the Institute was therefore to train indigenous Kenyans in management and entrepreneurship skills. Prior to 1980, the Institute was known as Management Training and Advisory Centre (MT&AC) and its mandate was to train and develop African managers and entrepreneurs in practical management and business skills.

In 1973 it was transferred from the Ministry of Labour to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which was responsible for development of small businesses. In 1980 it was renamed Kenya Institute of Business Training (KIBT). Over time, KIBT has operated in different ministries through various executive orders. The current Executive Order No. 1 of 2022 has domiciled the institute under the Ministry of Cooperatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development and mandated to provide entrepreneurial and management training, business information, counseling services to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and other interested groups.

KIBT is currently located at Parklands along Ojijo Road, opposite Parklands Sports club.
